Box springs will elevate the mattress to height that is greater than the safety side rails.
Box springs will push the person in the bunk bed higher than the safety rail will allow for the safety rail to be effective.
Some do still have springs inside that aim the assist the bed with absorbing the weight of your body which will ultimately assist with keeping your bed sturdy and supportive over time.
